Adhesion Vs Cohesion

Cohesion is the ability of similar molecules to stick together due to mutual attraction. The ability of different molecules or surfaces to cling to each other is referred to as adhesion. So here this article gives the difference between adhesion vs cohesion to better understand this topic.

Adhesion Vs Cohesion:

  • Adhesion happens between two dissimilar molecules or substances, while the cohesion is two similar substances face the force of attraction this force is known as a cohesion force.
  • Adhesion is generally the force of attraction present between the water molecules and the walls of xylem vessels, while the cohesion force is rampant among water molecules.
  • Cohesion is caused by hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces, whereas adhesion is caused by electrostatic or mechanical forces that exist between two types of different substances.
  • Capillary action and meniscus are the effects of adhesion, while the surface tension, meniscus, and capillary action are the effects of cohesion.
  • A strong adhesion force spreads the liquid all over the surface, whereas a strong cohesion force forms water droplets on any surface.
