Advantages and Disadvantages of 3 Point Starter

A 3-point starter is a device whose main function is starting and maintaining the speed of the DC motor. The 3-point starter connects the resistance in series with the circuit reduces the high starting current and protects the machines from damage. Here this post gives the advantages and disadvantages of 3 point starter to better understand this topic.

Advantages of 3-Point Starter

  • A 3-point starter is used with DC shunt motors.
  • Three-point statrter helps to speed control of the motor.
  • This starter can be also used in lathe factories and spinning mills.
  • It reduces the high starting current.
  • A three-point starter protects the motor from short circuits and overload issues.

Disadvantages of 3 point starter

  • The main drawback of 3 point starter motor is, that it is a huge variation of speed by adjustment of the field rheostat.
  • This starter is not suitable for variable-speed motors.
  • When increasing the high resistance to achieve a high speed, the field current will always be extremely low.
  • Large field current adjustments are not suitable with  3-point starters.
  • The holding electromagnet won't be able to endure the force of the spring if the field current is relatively low.
  • The NVC fails to hold the handle in the ON position, which would disconnect the motor from the supply, at a low field current.
  • This magnet can disconnect the H handle from the power source and release its arm via the usual motor function.
  • When there is no volt trip coil associated in the parallel field, the 4-point stater can therefore be used.
  • The field winding does not have extra resistance in series, so speed regulation isn't possible.
  • The condition circuit may be damaged during a fault because there isn't any extra protective resistance.
