For Multimedia files such as videos, MOV is a video format that was developed by Apple. MOV files are an additional digital container format. With the Apple quick time player in mind, apple created MOV. MOV videos use the MPEG-4 codec for encoding, just like MP4 files.

Video formats saved in the MOV format, which complies with Apple quick time movie encoding standards and data compression guidelines, are suffixed with .mov. The MOV file format was introduced by Apple in 1998. The MOV file extension indicates that the file is an Apple time movie housed in a quick time file format(QTFF) container format. The MAC and Windows operating systems are both compatible with MOV files. Furthermore, these MOV files work with DVD players and the Sony PSP. MOV is perfect for editing using high-end video editing programs like Video Studio Pro.
