What does SMTP mean?

SMTP is a TCP/IP protocol used in sending and receiving electronic mail between servers. The message that can be retrieved with an e-mail client uses IMAP and POP protocol. Communication between mail servers uses TCP port 25. 

SMTP first defined by RFC 821 in 1982, it was updated in 2008 with extended SMTP addition by RFC 5321 which is most widely used today.
