Bandwidth vs latency

What is bandwidth?

The maximum amount of data that your internet service provider can transfer from one location to another is referred to as bandwidth. Your download and upload speed are measured in megabits per second, or Mbps, and are the two components of bandwidth. Consider bandwidth to be a pipe, the wider it is, the more data that can be transferred at once.

What is latency?

The amount of time it takes for data to travel from one location to another is referred to as latency. During a speed test, latency may also be referred to as a ping. Also, know as a ping time, is typically measured in milliseconds, or ms.

Bandwidth vs latency:

  • Bandwidth is the maximum rate of transfer of the data over a defined period of time across the given path, Latency, on the other hand, refers to the amount of time it takes for a packet to travel from one point on the network to another.
  • Bandwidth is a measurement of the size of a data connection which is a physical quantity measured in megabits per second or gigabits per second, while latency refers to any kind of delay in data communication over a network and it is measured at some amount of time usually in a millisecond.
  • Bandwidth is a major factor in audio and video streaming & low bandwidth results in a painful amount of buffering or terrible video quality, while the latency comes to play when you are the one broadcasting the stream, and the high latency can cause things to go off sync.
