VLAN vs VPN | Difference between VLAN vs VPN

Both VLAN and VPN may be excellent solutions to your needs. It all depends on the functionality and level of security you require. A VLAN is useful if you manage an organization and want to divide your existing LAN into smaller chunks for better control.

What is VLAN?

VLAN  stands for virtual local area network is a collection of devices on one or more local area networks that are configured to interact with each other at the data link layer as if they were in the same physical location, or as if they were in the same broadcast domain.

What is VPN?

VPN stands for virtual private network, It is a technology that allows for the secure extension of a private network over a public network. It is most commonly associated with remote access to a company's network resources.

VLAN vs VPN | Different between VLAN and VPN:

  • Companies use VLANs to consolidate devices spread across multiple physical locations into a single broadcast domain. VPNs are used to securely transmit data between two offices of the same company or between offices of different companies. Individuals use it for their personal needs as well.
  • A VPN subcategory is a VLAN. VPN is a technology that creates a virtual tunnel over the internet for secure data transmission.
  • A VPN is a more advanced, but more expensive, option that provides encryption and anonymity.  A VLAN is useful for splitting a network into logical sections for better management, but it lacks the security features of a VPN.
  • A virtual local area network eliminates the need for routers as well as the costs associated with router deployment. A VPN improves a network's overall efficiency.
  • In an insecure online environment, a VPN is used. When one of two devices cannot establish an external connection, a VPN is usually used to connect them. Prior to granting access, it is necessary to obtain special permission.
