TFTP Vs SFTP | Difference | Comparison

Two file transfer protocols are SFTP and TFTP. TFTP is easier to set up and use than SFTP since it is simpler. The fact that SFTP employs SSH to encrypt data makes it more secure. So TFTP is an unsecured file transfer protocol while SFTP is a secure file transfer protocol via various communication. Learn about the two protocol and their main difference. So let's debate TFTP Vs SFTP to understand more about it.

What is TFTP?

TFTP is an application layer protocol. When we need to transfer a file from client to server or same from the server to the client without any need for features of FTP, then TFTP is used. TFTP is a software package that is smaller. It can fit into the read-only memory of diskless workstations which can be used during the bootstrapping time.

What is SFTP?

SFTP is also referred to as SSH FTP or file transfer protocol via secure shell (SSH). The SSH protocol for the suite includes SFTP. All shell accounts on the remote SFTP server are accessible, enabling safe file transmission over SSH. Information is exchanged after a secure connection has been established, and SFTP confirms the client's identity.

TFTP Vs SFTP | Difference between TFTP and SFTP:

  • TFTP stands for trivial file transfer protocol. While SFTP stands for Secure shell file transfer protocol.
  • TFTP was standardized in the year 1981. While TFTP was founded by Tatu Ylonen in 1997.
  • TFTP provides a path to transfer files from client to server and server to client. While SFTP provides a secure channel for transferring files between the two endpoints.
  • TFTP operates on port number 69. While TFTP operartes on port number 22.
  • TFTP neither provides encryption nor authentication. While SFTP provides encryption authentication for data transfer.
  • TFTP supports the lockstep method. SFTP support transfer resume method.
  • TFTP uses UDP protocol for transferring small single files. While SFTP uses FTP protocol but in more secure ways.
